Celebration of valentine’s day.

The power of a womanizer is his spending spree to his victims.

–                                                         Pastor Godwin Guobadia.

Day (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day probably took its name from a priest who was martyred about AD 270 by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus.

According to legend, the priest signed a letter to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and with whom he had fallen in love, “from your Valentine.” The holiday also had origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century. The lifestyle of a Roman was that of wild parties and drinking, feasting and celebrating one goddess or another. Peter the apostle, frowning at this wrote to the young church in1 Peter 4:3, For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banqueting, and abominable idolatries: Paul in one of his letters reminded us thus: Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Tomorrow, 14th February, to celebrate lovers’ day, commonly called Valentine's day. The above reference tells of the origin of this day, which is being celebrated all over the world by lovers. Nowadays, it has gradually entered the Pentecostals churches and the mega congregation and some family churches organised programs about this day. Should a christian celebrate it? A pastor, name withheld, told me it is all about love. Therefore, where there is love, Christians ought to promote it and showcase it, for God is love. Taken on the surface, there is nothing absolutely wrong with the explanation given by my pastor friend. But there is more to this than meets the eye for one: you do not need a particular day to sow love, for love is inborn into our lives when we become born-again Christians. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, …. True love is inborn into the live of the christian and it shows in his dealing with all: spouse, children, employers, neighbours, masters, servant and humankind. It is a way of life with God’s planted love leading us in all we do. What we see today is a sensual love where so-called lovers wallow in sin, such as premarital sex, and some instance orgies by youths. It is a time to let go of all restraints to allow our canal desires to commit sensual immorality to have its way. just like it was of the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February, where the pairing off of women with men by lottery to wallow in shameful practice before it was replaced by Pope Gelasius with St. Valentine’s Day, we are gradually seeing a return to those days. Many women give up their chastity during this time and many are forcibly abused. It is clear to the blind and loud enough to the deaf that day is nothing more than a day of premarital sex among hitherto chaste youths. Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? See Romans 6:1

Dear husband, you do not wait till valentine day before you can show to your wife you love her. Many today demand expensive gift from their spouse during this festival failure to buy shows you do not love. Dear wife, it will be a wrong yardstick to measure your husband’s love and honor for you with how many gifts you got.

As for those in courtship; do not place any demand on your fiance’. It is character display daily that can show how much he loves you, not this once a year thing. And sad enough, I hear little about the place of gift in a christian courtship/engagement these days. Aman can be a good giver and yet not a good husband. There is a difference between a generous man and a good man; and you can not also be a good husband if you do not know how to give your time and other valuables in a relationship. Knowing where to draw the line is the work of a christian counselor. Therefore, Christians should bend over backward just because it is another February 14th. All day is a day unto God and an opportunity to sow love in other people’s life with no amorous thinking.

As usual, I will see you in church!
