When leaders lost their cool

The news was shocking to some, as it was outrageous to others.Ahmed Isa also known as ordinary president, who has gradually and painstakingly impeded himself and organization into the heart of many oppressed people in Nigerian with his radio radio show. The news goes: Ahmed Isah, the host of Brekete Family, a human rights programme, has announced his plan to end his show amid the controversy on assault.

The ‘ordinary president’, slapped a defenceless woman after an interview in which the lady confessed to setting his brother’s daughter on fire who allegedly confessed to being a witch.

This had sparked a controversy as many expressed shock over the conduct of the human rights campaigner known for helping ordinary people get justice via his show, which is aired on Human Rights Radio 101.1, Abuja and streams online via social media platforms. The success of his radio program and assistants to the ordinary citizen has attracted foundations such as gave his program over six hundred million dollars in 2019.

Speaking on the Wednesday edition of the programme, Isah tendered an apology for slapping the woman.

“I apologise to everybody that I have offended. Please, I’m a human being. I’m bound to make mistakes. The zeal and passion triggered me. As a human being, even computers tend to malfunction. There is blood flowing in my veins. I get emotional sometimes.

“Whenever I do anything out-of-control based on emotions, I always apologise when I realise it and correct the mistakes. For those disappointed in me, please forgive me. For those I have offended, please find a place in your heart to forgive me.” On his decision to end the programme, Isah said there is no going back as he has made up his mind.

Many fans of the programme have been appealing to him to reconsider the idea of ending the programme which has provided succour to victims of injustice.

Brekete Family first aired on Kiss FM Abuja in 2009, and then later on Crowther Love FM.

Following its initial success, the programme’s headquarters, Human Rights Radio, Abuja, was established.

Beneficiaries of the broadcast have praised Brekete Family for empowering people in various ways, which include securing financial help.

The programme has blossomed into several other areas such as the Brekete Academy, where certified instructors offer courses in professional development in various fields.

Millions of ordinary Nigerians, government officials, politicians, law enforcement, and even foreigners listen the programme to. It is a place where people get public redress, facilitate arbitration and has been used to raise funds for scholarship program for the poor, sick, or hungry.

They conduct the programme in Pidgin English and features real-life issues and events concerning human rights. It has gained a wide acceptance and mass appeal, especially because of its nature of operation, similar to a community network. Hence, they reach out to the underprivileged and intervene on behalf of the victims of daily human rights abuse.

In 2011 during one of a program in Ogun state, the headquarters of Winners chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo slapped a young girl who confessed to being a witch for Jesus.

Reaction to cases of witchcraft in Africa differs from what obtains in the western world. Over there anyone who confessed to being one or is fingered to be one is severely dealt with even to the point of being killed without no one asking questions. The way we see witchcraft in Africa differs from the biblical perspective. The other day, an old woman found in sitting on the ground at a junction in a village was gradually crowded and eventually someone called her a witch and before you know it all agree and she was being pelted with stones, calling her witch die! Her children ran down to rescue her saying, she sleeps walk at night and their mother is never a witch. Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Such as the witch at Endor, who professed to evoke the dead, in order to get them to disclose the secrets of the spiritual world. Apostle paul in his epistle only mentioned the word once, and he associated it with works of the flesh. See Galatians 5:19-20, Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies. Here paul called it works of the flesh not an evil spirit possession, but the works of a canal man. The apostle did not see any difference between a fornicator and a witchcraft! Whether deliberate, he did not see this as evil spirit or sorcery like in the old testament, why? Could there be a third form of witchcraft that exists in Africa? Is this a territorial spirit that exists only on that continent? But this is true or not dealing with demons is not a physical engagement -it is spiritual. 2 Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Evil spirits are subject to the believer. Matthew 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. It is our prayers that those we are helping, leading should never put us in a position to lose our cool.
