NIGERIA @ 50 THE WAY FORWARD.
'THE WALL OF JERUSALEM ALSO IS BROKEN DOWN AND THE GATE THEREFORE ARE BURNED WITH FIRE' [NEHEMIAH1:3B]
Am a preacher in case you do not know and i want to address the malaise in the Nigeria polity from a biblical point so as to see the way forward from the spiritual and developmental mire we as a people have found ourselves.Of a truth,Nigeria at 50 have nothing to be proud off: things are getting more and more difficult for the average Nigerian. Many Nigerians like myself, lament the chaos we see in our body polity, and other sectors.I lament the spate of kidnappings that has refuse to abate, that has turned some beloved state in my beloved country into a lawless state. One of the basic need of a citizen is security of lives and properties , but at present both can not be guaranteed in my country,Nigeria. You will agree with me that this is not the best of times to party, You will agree with me that a man who can not find his bearing at 50 years of age has a long way to go.I call upon all Nigerians as i wish all a happy celebration and use this time to reflect more than drinking and eating.
From the above scriptures we hear the lament of a man in anguish and a man that care so much about his father. Like Moses, even though, he was well off he did not separate himself from the ills and the national disgrace that his people were going through.unlike many of us today, were not only quick in changing our nationality we will do it by any means possible. scores of report come our way the confusion that follows a man who says he is from a particular country in Africa and after his demise his people could not take the corpse to his country because the records shows he is not from that land. Am not condemning you , but condemn a situation that makes one denies his country of origin, am not judging you, but a situation that makes one distance himself from his own mother land. It is indeed, hard to find a person with the postulation of Nehemiah today, but nevertheless, that is the person we need in our body polity in order to go forward. The face of our political leaders are written with greed, corruption, and unpatriotic tendencies: have people not bee paid in times past to allow a ship load of toxic waste to be berthed in our shores?
A person with the personality of the biblical Jeremiah, is needed here i want to highlights these qualities.
patriotic tendency: Jeremiah was well off an d had a good job in the palace, he did not only work in the palace, but has access to the king; it is one thing to work in the palace and another to have access to the palace. So you can say as a foreigner Nehemiah has attained an enviable position, but yet he cries, he laments he was pained by the news he heard concerning his own land.
WALLS: our wall is our pride or disgrace.A broken wall is what is responsible for the brain drain which have seen the best of our academicians, best of our artists, sportsperson, and moving out to seek greener pasture in other lands.
Whether we like it or not you can not deny your country though you migrate. We should feel the spirit of the Jews who sat by the rivers bank and penned the famous song' by the rivers of Babylon'. our wall are either standing tall or fallen to be trodden under the feet of unworthy men.our wall can be our country, or family. we must rise to the occasion by doing all that is required to make it stand erect.
RALLY:Nehemiah was able to rally the best of the land together and set out with a purpose: purpose and direction are some of the ingredient needed in development to development. Even when distraction came they refused to be distracted and choose to concentrate on nation building to the shame of their two detractors see Nehemiah chapter 4.
ALL HANDS ON DECK: Nehemiah was able to rally the people together and all found something to do. the laborers, the carpenters, the builders, the fighters all found something to do as a contribution to building the fallen wall. If we must rise again all must take it as a personal responsible. the driver, the medical doctor, the lawyer, the teacher, the market women, the trader, the pastor, the policeman and even the student. All of us see it as a task that he must do.
UNITY:When there is unity of purpose there is nothing we can not achieve as a nation. We have more than two hundred and fifty tribe, we are as divided as our tongues. our love for our country must cut off parochial tribal sentiments, nepotism and divisions. we are all Nigeria and that should supersede whatever sentiments we may-have. Religious affiliations must not be used to foment trouble, riots or mayhem. Politics are meant for the patriotic not for those looking for the state treasures to loot.
It is high time we once again place Nigeria in the place of national pride. It is time we all are proud once again to flash our passport without fear of suspension or intimidation from any country's immigration.
AS we chew on our food let us do so like a man filled with thoughts as we drink our wine let us drink like a man deep in thoughts. Who knows our story and political landscape may change with the coming of age.
Happy celebrations.
